The Silver Eagle saw its beginning in 1986 when United States began minting gold and silver bullion coins in an effort to compete with foreign bullion coins such as the Canadian Maple Leaf and the South African Krugerrand. Minted by the United States Mint, the Silver American Eagle has become the most popular silver bullion coin in the world because of its beauty, quality and the assurance of content by the U.S. Government. These legal tender coins, first minted in 1986, are produced from silver mined in the United States. On the front of the silver eagle coin, you will find the same “Walking Liberty” design, created by Adolphe Weinman, that was in used on the 1916-1947 half dollar. The Walking Liberty Half Dollar is considered one of the most beautiful coins ever minted in the United States. The design on the reverse side of the silver eagle was created by John Mercanti. The coin is often called the Silver American Eagle since the reverse side of the coin displays a family of eagles. The face value of each Silver Eagle coin is $1 USD and is comprised of one troy ounce of 99.93% silver and .07% copper. Since the United States Mint began producing the Silver Eagles, the total coin sales have exceeded 130 million. Silver Eagle Dollar coins make great gifts, are popular as collectibles and are considered a safe investment. Silver has always had the distinct reputation of being the most affordable of all the precious metals. Anyone in the public can order proof coins directly from the United States Mint, but only select representatives have direct access to uncirculated bullion coins — these representatives make uncirculated Silver Eagle coins available to the secondary market. It's easy to find, buy and sell uncirculated Silver Eagles. You can utilize brokerage companies, precious metal dealers and local coin shops for your purchase. Prices for silver eagles will fluctuate as based on the current silver market price. Because of this fluctuation, it is impossible to say what the price of a Silver Eagle coin will be at any future date. Only on the day you purchase will you know the exact price you will need to pay.
